Buying Tips for Online Auctions

Internet auction sites offer a quick and easy way to shop, without leaving the comfort of your armchair. You have access to thousands of products, all ready to buy at the click of your mouse.
Whilst online auctions can be fun, and a great way to grab a bargain, it is important for you to exercise caution, and to know the risks. If you do have a problem, some auction websites may offer a complaints resolution process or anti-fraud guarantees. However, not all sites do, so make sure you read the terms and conditions carefully.
Follow our guidelines for safe and secure shopping at online auctions:
1. Register Early
Registering with an internet auction site give you the opportunity to bid on, or to offer items up for sale. However, it's often worth registering with a site even if you don't intend to use it right away. As a member, you will usually be able to sign up for updates on all the latest and best offers. You can often specify if you're looking for something in particular, and when that item comes up for sale, you'll be immediately notified by e-mail.
All sites offer free registration, and you are under no obligation to spend any money until you have found exactly what you want.
2. Research
Check the description, type of model and retail price of the goods. Look at similar items on sale to make sure that you will be getting the best deal. If an item only has a limited description be wary. Look for listings that have included a photograph, so you can see the item, before you purchase.
3. Shipping
Always make sure you know how much the seller will charge you for shipping costs. Whilst many are reasonable, there are others who will offer items at a cheaper price, but at a high shipping cost. This can be much higher than the item itself in some cases. Take this into account when comparing prices.
4. Payment
Before you put in a bid, find out what form of payment the seller will accept. If they will only take cheques or money orders, think about whether you are willing to risk the uncertainty of waiting for your cheque to arrive and clear, before your item is sent to you. If possible, use a credit card, as it will offer you the most protection if there's a problem.
5. Reputation
Always check the seller's reputation:
- How much negative feedback have they received?
- What comments have other buyers left for them?
- What sort of feedback have they left for other buyers?
6. Small Print
Check all the conditions of sale:
- Is postage included in the price?
- Is the seller based in the UK?
- How will the goods be posted?
- Will you need extra insurance?
- What is their returns policy?
7. Queries
If in doubt, ask the seller any questions you might have before you bid. A good seller will always welcome enquiries.
8. Bidding
Before you make a bid, think carefully. Think about the maximum you are willing to pay, making sure that this will give you value for money. Once you have put a bid in, you will not be able to retract it. If you win, you will be expected to pay.
9. Be Prepared to Look Elsewhere
If in any doubt, look elsewhere. There are millions of items on sale everyday across the UK auction sites, and so whatever you're looking for, there's bound to be another one up for sale soon.
